Medicare Plan G

The most comprehensive Medicare Supplement plan available to new enrollees — covering nearly all out-of-pocket costs beyond Original Medicare.

What is Medicare Plan G?

Medicare Plan G is a supplemental insurance plan (Medigap) that helps pay for many of the costs that Original Medicare does not cover. It is one of the ten standardized Medigap plans available in most states and is considered the second most comprehensive plan available, behind the now-closed Plan F.

Since Plan F is no longer available to people who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020, Plan G has become the most popular and most comprehensive Medigap option for new Medicare enrollees.

What Does Plan G Cover?

Medicare Plan G covers the following:

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used up)
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • First three pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Part B excess charges (charges above the Medicare-approved amount)
  • Foreign travel emergency care (80% of charges, up to plan limits)

What Plan G Does NOT Cover

The only gap in Plan G coverage is the Medicare Part B deductible. In 2025, the Part B deductible is $257 per year. This means you pay this amount out of pocket before your Plan G coverage kicks in for Part B services. After that, Plan G covers essentially everything else.

How Much Does Plan G Cost?

Plan G premiums vary based on your age, gender, location, and the insurance company you choose. In Utah, monthly premiums for Plan G typically range from around $100 to $250 per month, depending on these factors.

Since all Plan G policies offer identical coverage regardless of the insurance company (they are standardized by law), the main differences between carriers are premium price and customer service reputation. This makes it especially important to compare rates from multiple companies.

Is Plan G Right for You?

Plan G is often the best choice for people who want maximum coverage with predictable out-of-pocket costs. It is particularly well-suited for:

  • People who want peace of mind knowing nearly all Medicare costs are covered
  • Those who travel frequently (foreign travel emergency coverage included)
  • People who see specialists often and want Part B excess charge coverage
  • New Medicare enrollees who want the most comprehensive available option

How to Enroll in Plan G in Southern Utah

The best time to enroll is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the 6-month window starting the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this period, no insurance company can deny you coverage or charge more due to health conditions.

We can help you compare Plan G rates from multiple carriers available in the St. George and Southern Utah area to find the best premium for your situation.
